Iminungkahi ng International Labour Organization (ILO) ang pagpapaigting ng pension system sa mga bansa tulad ng Pilipinas upang makatulong sa mga mamamayan nito sa nararanasang pandemya.
Ayon kay Nuno Meira Cunha, senior specialist ng social protection sa ILO, kahit mayroon ang bansa tulad ng Social Security System (SSS), hindi ito sapat para suportahan ang lahat ng senior citizens.
"This creates a challenge not only for pension schemes but also for families. Today we see it's really hard for families to take care of their elderly, and if we don't have schemes in place to protect those workers when they get old we're probably going to face a big problem in the future," sabi ni Cunha.
Dagdag niya, dapat pag-aralan ng gobyerno ang gagawing universal pension na mabibigyan ng pensiyon ang mga senior citizens kahit walang inihulog sa SSS o ibang institusyon gaya ng Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).
Paliwanag ni Cunha, malaki ang maitutulong nito sa ekonomiya sa mga susunod na taon, kahit pa magiging magastos ito sa umpisa.
"That's probably a first step, if you want a low-hanging fruit, to ensure that everyone has some level of protection. Because even during a crisis, this also allows you, if you have already this level of protection, you want to inject money into the economy, that's also a solution," ayon kay Cunha.
