West zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) recently joined the 2023 International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) by rallying 65 employee-volunteers and some members of the media to join the contingent that cleared out trash from the Manila Bay. It also set up drink-wash stations in eight cleanup locations in Metro Manila, namely: Manila Bay, Dolomite Beach, Baseco Beach, and Estero De Sunog Apog in Manila; Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park and Fisherman’s Wharf in Parañaque City; Tangos North and South in Navotas City; and in Bacoor City.

The Maynilad volunteers who cleared out the shores of Manila Bay during the ICC event were able to collect around 420 kilograms of garbage.

Spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Philippine Coast Guard, and partner cities—i.e., Manila, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Valenzuela, Malabon, Navotas, and Caloocan—the ICC aims to engage people to remove trash from the world’s beaches and waterways. Since 2010, Maynilad has been supporting this project as part of its environmental advocacy and sustainability initiatives.

The ICC is the world’s largest volunteer effort to clean the ocean. In 2003, Presidential Proclamation No. 470 was issued declaring the third Saturday of September of every year as ICC Day in the Philippines. Every year, volunteers clear tons of trash from coastlines, rivers, and lakes and record the trash they collect.
