Pumanaw na si Commission on Human Rights chairman Atty. Jose Luis Martin “Chito” Gascon ngayong Sabado nang umaga sa edad na 57.
Sa Facebook post ng brother niyang si Miguel, kinumpirma nitong namatay na ang CHR chairman dahil sa COVID-19, bandang alas-6:30 ng umaga ngayong Oktubre 9.
“Sa dami mong Laban, sa COVID pa tayo na talo! ???????? Love you Kuya! RIP Chito Gascon,” post ni Miguel.
Naglabas naman ng official statement ang komisyon sa pagpanaw ni Gascon na ayon kay CHR spokesperson Atty. Jacqueline Ann de Guia, “At a time of unprecedented human rights challenges, Chair Chito courageously and steadfastly upheld the constitutional mandate of the Commission. Amidst the unrelenting attacks against the institution and to him personally, he was unwavering and unflinching in fighting for the universal values of freedom, truth, and justice that are essential in the pursuit of human rights.”
“The CHR will continue the human rights work with equal fervor and sincerity that Chair Chito exemplified in Chairman Chito's work,” dagdag pa ni De Guia.
Si Gascon ay naging CHR chairman simula noong 2015 matapos na i-appoint ng yumaong dating Pangulong Benigno Aquino III.
Nagpahayag naman ng pakikiramay ang ilang pulitiko, mambabatas at matataas na opisyal ng gobyerno sa pagkamatay ng CHR chairman.
“Ngayong umaga, sinalubong ako ng napakalungkot na balita. Pumanaw na si Commission on Human Rights Chair Chito Gascon,” pahayag ni Vice President Leni Robredo.
“Nakikiramay ako sa kanyang asawa’t anak, sa buong staff ng CHR, at sa buong hanay ng mga nagtanggol sa karapatang pantao at patas at malayang lipunan. Sa trabaho niya at aktibismo, Chito touched many lives. He was a student leader, advocate, and mentor that so many looked up to. Noong estudyante ako sa UP, sa mga martsa namin laban sa diktatura, si Chito ang nanguna bilang Chair ng UP student council. Binuksan niya ang pinto para makilahok nang mas malalim ang napakarami sa demokrasya natin,” sabi pa ni Robredo.
“I am devastated to hear the news of Chito's death. He was not just a fellow public servant, he was also my good friend. Chito understood the valuable link between human dignity and democracy,” saad ni Senador Risa Hontiveros.
Nagpaabot din ng pakikiramay sa pamilya ni Gascon sina Senador Koko Pimentel at Senador Richard Gordon sa biglaan nitong pagpanaw.
