Nilalaban ni Marcus Douthit na maging susunod na naturalized player ng Gilas Pilipinas si Justin Brownlee, ang import ng Barangay Ginebra sa PBA.
Sa isang panayam sa Extra Session podcast ng Guerilla Podcast Syndicate-Philippines, inihayag ni Douthit ang kanyang suhestiyon na maging naturalized player si Brownlee dahil na rin sa kanyang mga kakayahan na pinakita sa mga nakalipas na taon.
Ayon kay Douthit, swak sa Gilas si Brownlee dahil sa kanyang abilidad na maglaro ng iba’t ibang posisyon. Ito rin ang magbibigay daan kila June Mar Fajardo at Kai Sotto na makapaglaro ng maraming minuto sa Gilas.
“My opinion is that I think they should go after someone like Justin Brownlee. I think right now, he is perfect just because he can play different positions. We still have June Mar and we still got Sotto coming up too. Those guys need minutes for international playing,” wika ni Douthit.
Si Douthit ang pinakaunang naturalized player ng bansa sa panahong itinayo ang Gilas Pilipinas national team. Sinundan siya ni Andray Blatche na posibleng hindi na maglaro sa koponan matapos ng kanyang nilaro sa 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup sa China.
Ayon kay Douthit, malaking bagay para sa koponan ang kaalaman ni Brownlee sa mga manlalaro sa Gilas Pilipinas at sa PBA sa paghahanda para sa mga kompetisyon.
“Everyone is thinking like we need a big guy. Right now, the game isn’t all about the big guys anymore. Justin has been playing in the Philippines longer than I have. So he knows everything and you don’t have to convince him to be a naturalized player. You don’t have to sell him to the country. He is on there. I think that’s what they should be doing. He knows the country just as well as Filipinos that live there,” ani Douthit.
