Iginiit ni Pangulong Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., na hindi niya gagamitin ang Philippines-US Mutual Defense Treaty kaugnay sa nangyaring panunutok ng military grade laser ng China sa Philippine Coast Guard sa Ayungin Shoal noong Pebrero 6.
Sa kanyang talumpati sa almuni homecoming ng Philippine Military Academy sa Baguio, sinabi ni Marcos na hindi sapat para gamitin ang Mutual Defense Treaty sa pagitan ng Pilipinas at Amerika kung saan lalo lamang lalala ang tensyon sa lugar.
“If we activate that, what we are doing is escalating, intensifying the tensions in the area. And I think that would be counterproductive,” punto ni Marcos.
“Besides, despite the fact that it was a military-grade laser that was pointed at our coast guard, I do not think that that is sufficient for it to trigger the Mutual Defense
Treaty,” saad pa ng Pangulo.
“We are in constant contact with our treaty partners, not only with the US but our ASEAN partners and other partners here in Asia.”
Nabatid na ang MDT ay nilagdaan noong 1951 na naguutos sa Manila at Washington na tumulong sa isa’t isa kung ang alinmang bansa ay nasa ilalim ng armadong pag-atake.
