Pumanaw na ang dating world heavyweight boxing champion na nagpataob kay Muhammad Ali noong 1978 na si Leon Spinks sa edad na 67 dahil sa cancer noong Biyernes nang gabi, ayon sa kanyang publicist.
Pahayag ng kanyang publicist, "At the time of his passing his wife Brenda Glur Spinks was by his side. Due to Covid restrictions, only a few close friends and other family were present.
“His final fight was fought with the same skill, grace and grit that had carried him through so many lifetime challenges.
“Leon fought his battle with numerous illnesses resiliently, never losing his trademark smile. Showing true Spinks determination, he never threw in the towel.”
Noong 1976, nagwagi si Spinks ng gold medal bilang light heavyweight sa Olympics na ginanap sa Montreal, Canada.
Noong February 15, 1978, nakaharap ni Spinks si Muhammad Ali sa Las Vegas, Nevada kung saan nasungkit nito ang heavyweight boxing championship. Nabawi naman ni Ali ang heavyweight title nang muli silang magharap 7 buwan matapos ang naturang laban na ginanap sa Superdome, New Orleans.
Taong 1995 nang magretiro si Spinks nang may 26-17-3 record at 14 knockouts.
Samantala, noong 2019, na-diagnosed na mayroong prostate cancer si Spinks at Disyembre ng kaparehong taon ay kumalat na ang cancer sa kanyang bladder.
