Pangungunahan ng isang babae ang New York Police Force sa kauna-unahang pagkakataon.
Ito ay matapos italaga ni Mayor-elect Eric Adams ang 49-anyos na si Keechant Sewell, ang 23-year veteran ng Nassau Police Department, kung saan siya unang naging chief of detectives noong September 2020.
Ang pagtalaga ni Adams kay Sewel ay bahagi ng kanyang campaign pledge kung saan bago pumasok sa pulitika ay naging pulis din ito.
Ayon kay Adams, “women often are "sitting on the bench" and "never allowed to get in the game" when it comes to policing.”
"That is stopping today," aniya.
Kapag nag-take over na sa departamento sa January si Sewell, siya rin ang magiging unang third black commissioner sa NYDP.
"I bring a different perspective to make sure the department looks like the city it serves, and making the decision, just as Mayor Adams did, to elevate women and people of colour to leadership positions," ani Sewell.
Ang NYPD ay nagtatalaga ng 35,000 police officers, kung saan 18% dito ay puro kababaihan.
