"Salamat PBBM sa dasal mo para sa Olympic athletes"

Ikinagalak ng buong Philippine sports world na naging bahagi ng State of the Nation address ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. kahapon ang pagsuporta sa palakasan lalo na ang kampanya ng 28 Filipino athletes sa Paris 22 sa Olympics at 6 na atleta sa Paralympics na magsisimula sa Biyernes sa French capital.

“Thank you, PBBM, for your kind wishes for the athletes at the Olympics,” ayon kay Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino. 

“It’s definitely inspiring and it’s an extreme boost to the morale not only to our athletes competing in Paris, but to the entire Philippine sports,” dagdag ni Tolentino na paroroon sa Paris  ngayong Martes para agapayan ang Philippine Olympic campaign.

“This maybe exaggerated but the President putting emphasis on sports in a very important event in his administration—something that’s never been done by past Presidents in memory— gives us the goose bumps,” dagdag ni Tolentino, bilang POC head ay  personal na mungkahi niya sa  Malacañang, kay President Marcos na ibilang ang sports agenda sa kanyang SONA.

“As we speak, 28 of our finest athletes are competing in Paris now for the glory of the Philippines, drawing appreciation through a rousing clap from his audience. “Let us wish them well and the best of luck.”

It’s not only the Paris Olympics campaign that was in President Marcos’s SONA, but also grassroots sports.

“Grassroots and sports of all programs are back, nailunsad na namin ang Palarong Pambansa after three years na pagkakatigil nito dahil sa pandemya,” aniya. 

Idinagdag ni Pangulong Marcos: “We will continue to support these health enhancing sports programs. 

“We are very grateful to the President for showing his love and concern for sports,” ani Tolentino. “And we, at the POC and Philippine sports as a whole, continuously thank his Administration for relentlessly supporting sports through his financial support.” 

Lucero sa Hotshots, Adamos sa Gins, Hanapi at Fernandez sa Terrafirma

Tuloy na pinauga ng NorthPort Batang Pier ang kanilang lineup matapos ang 2nd round ng 2024 PBA Rookie Draft kahapon. Naipasok si Zav Lucero sa Magnolia Hotshots at si Ben Adamos sa Barangay Ginebra San Miguel sa isang hiwalay na deals.

Kapalit ng mga young bigs, tinanggap ng NorthPort si veteran guard Jio Jalalon maging ang bihirang gamitin na si Abu Tratter ng Magnolia, habang balik din sa Batang Pier si Sidney Onwubere mula sa Ginebra.

Aprubado umano ang trade ng PBA. Si Jalalon ayon sa NorthPort ay beteranong gagabay sa mas batang squad maging si Onwubere. Samantala, ang foot-5 na si Tratter ay may 4.8 markers, 3.0 boards, at 0.4 assists pero limitado si Onwubere sa 3.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, at 0.6 assists per contest.

Kinuha ng Hotshots si Lucero -- dating standout ng University of the Philippines -- matapos pumoste ng averages 12.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, at 2.0 assists para sa Terrafirma Dyip team sa unang taon sa PBA.

Nagpatuloy pa rin ang Barangay Ginebra San Miguel sa pagpapalit ng roster. Muling nakipag-trade ang Tim Cone-coached squad sa TerraFirma Dyip at inilipat ang 2024 PBA Rookie Draft second-round selections na sina Didat Hanapi at Paolo Hernandez ayon sa isang source ng ABS-CBN News.

Kapalit nila ang Dyip's Season 50 second-round pick. Ang 6-foot-2 na si Hanapi ay naglaro sa Adamson University noong college. Si Hernandez ay isa sa main weapons ng Mapua University. Inaasahan silang makakasama ni 10th overall pick Mark Nonoy, second-round pick CJ Catapusan, at third-round draftee Peter Alfaro.

Ito ang second trade ng dalawang koponan sa loob ng 3 araw nang unang kunin ng Kings si Stephen Holt, Isaac Go, at eventual third-overall pick RJ Abarrientos kapalit nina Christian Standhardinger, Stanley Pringle, at Nonoy. Pending pa ang approval ng trade sa liga, nanatili sa Gins sina Abarrientos at third-round pick Paul Garcia bilang rookies sa lineup.

EJ Obiena, konsentrado na makuha ang ginto

Walang ibang nasa isip si Ernest John "EJ" Obiena, isa sa pinakamalakas na medal potential sa Paris ng Pilipinas kundi ang konsentrahin ang isip at katawan sa laro, ayon kay  Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino nang makausap sa isang maigsing internet call ang world No. 2 men’s pole vaulter Martes ng hatinggabi.

“EJ is doing well and is very focused, him despite missing on a medal in the Diamond League in Paris,” ayon kay Tolentino, na tiniyak na ang mga magulang na si Emerson, dating national pole vaulter, at Jeanette ay tutuntong sa Paris para mag-cheers at suportahan ang kanilang anak. 

Ayon sa tatay Obiena sinabi ni Tolentino na ito na rin ang namahala sa mga kailangan ng anak sa  Olympics para mas makapagpokus ito sa laro.

“After the Diamond League, EJ and his team will remain in France and no longer return to their base in Formia [Italy],” ani Tolentino at idinagdag na hindi na rin praktikal sa Team Obiena na magbiyahe dahil ang  men’s pole vault competitions sa Paris ay magsisimula na sa Agosto 3 para sa kuwalipikasyon at August 5 para sa final na idaraos sa 81,000-seat Stade de France.

Makakasama ni Obiena sa Team Philippines sa Paris ang weightlifters na sina Vanessa Sarno, John Febuar Ceniza at Elreen Ando; boxers Aira Villegas, Hergie Bacyadan, Carlo

Paalam, Nesthy Petecio at Eumir Felix Marcial; rower Joanie Delgaco; fencer Samantha Catantan; gymnasts Carlos Yulo, Emma Malabuyo, Aleah Finnegan at Levi Ruivivar; swimmers Kayla Sanchez at Harold Hatch; judoka Kiyomi Watanabe; golfers Bianca Pagdanganan at Dottie Ardina; at hurdlers Lauren Hoffman at John Cabang Tolentino.
